Here’s To Those Salmon Caviar And Freshly Sliced Bacon New Year’s Resolutions

Salmon Roe + Freshly Sliced Bacon

Is it just me, or is the number of new “artisan” food businesses of late completely overwhelming? Overpriced, celebrity-hyped and caked in way too much graphic design make-up, too. Particularly when we have so many longstanding food businesses to explore right around the corner….

So for 2012, I’m giving up one of my Trader Joe’s/Whole Foods cheese trips a month (if those curds are doled out carefully, the occasional semi-affordable treat currently in my pantry larder) in favor of seeking out that little Japanese fish market, Jewish deli and who knows what else might pop up in drive-by culinary sightings. Like that tiny Ukrainian grocer who’s been selling freshly-sliced bacon for the same price as a vac-u sealed package of Oscar-Who-Knows-What at my local chain grocery store. But where have I been buying my bacon the past ten years? Right. Convenient consumption isn’t all it’s so brilliantly marketed to be.

But the weekly farmers market trips stay. Besides, we all need a little kale to fuel that bitter green 2012 outlook — Nothing a few sugar dates can’t fix this time of year.

Happy New Year.
